Hypermobility syndrome

Understanding hypermobility

The superficial muscles (such as the pectorals and hamstrings) provide power, speed, and strength, while the deep and deepest layers — including stabilisers like the deep fibres of the gluteus maximus and the transversus abdominis — are responsible for control, support, and proximal stability.

In hypermobile people, these deeper stabilising muscles often underperform. As a result, the larger superficial muscles try to compensate and take on a role they're not anatomically designed for. Over time, these muscles fatigue, stiffen, and become more susceptible to pain and injury.

We all have different levels of mobility. Some people can do the splits, bend forward and touch the floor with their palms, or hyperextend their elbows and knees. A significant number of elite athletes, including Olympians, are naturally hypermobile — their increased range of motion often provides a performance advantage in sports and training.

However, greater mobility comes with a cost. Research shows that hypermobile individuals are more prone to injuries due to reduced joint stability. The issue isn't just flexibility — it's the lack of muscular control over that extra range of motion, which often leads to soft tissue strain and recurring injuries.
